Clayton-le-Moors’ Cash 4 Clothing is helping Rosemere Cancer Foundation make a fashion statement.
Vanessa Ratcliffe, who is in charge of the Whalley Road store, has raised £416.68 for the charity over the last 18 months by giving customers, who bring in pre-loved clothes, shoes, bags, belts and accessories, the option of either donating the value of their items to Rosemere Cancer Foundation or taking the money themselves.
Vanessa said: “A 10kg bag of unwanted items is worth £4. It’s been touching to see so many customers decide to support Rosemere Cancer Foundation. Together, their generous donations have mounted up to a significant sum.
“There’s been a lot in the news recently about the negative impact of the fashion industry on the environment. In this country, we throw away 1.2 million tonnes of clothing annually so recycling is a way of helping counteract this and by supporting a local charity at the same time, it’s a double win situation.”
Vanessa added: “It’s very simple. All anyone need do is bag their unwanted but wearable clothes, shoes and handbags and bring them in. Tell the member of staff you give your bag to that you want to donate your money to Rosemere Cancer Foundation.
It was local residents Bob and Trudy Tuffnell, who first approached Vanessa to ask her to help Rosemere Cancer Foundation by giving customers the opportunity to donate the cash for their goods.
The couple are committed Rosemere Cancer Foundation volunteers and have been ever since Trudy was treated for breast cancer nine years ago at Rosemere Cancer Centre, Lancashire and South Cumbria’s regional specialist cancer treatment centre at the Royal Preston Hospital. Since then, they have organised their own fundraising events and volunteered for supermarket collections and other Rosemere Cancer Foundation activities.
Bob said: “It was an idea that came to us after we had a clear out and we’re delighted that so many people have supported it.”
Louise Grant, Rosemere Cancer Foundation’s East Lancs fundraising co-ordinator, added: “We are very grateful to Bob, Trudy, Vanessa and all Cash 4 Clothing’s customers for getting together and making such a fashion statement on our behalf.”
Cash 4 Clothing is open from 9-30 am to 4-30 pm Monday to Friday. For directions and more information, visit www.cash4clothing.co.uk
Its donation to Rosemere Cancer Foundation was boosted by money donated from customers taking their unwanted items to its sister shop in Bacup Road, Ratwenstall, which also collects funds on behalf of the charity.
