A consultation and examination room on Ward 11 of the Royal Preston Hospital that is used daily by consultants and clinical nurse specialists seeing patients with bowel and other gastrointestinal problems has undergone a £3,667 make-over, funded by Rosemere Cancer Foundation.
Old shelving and mismatched furniture that cramped and cluttered the room has been replaced with fitted store cupboards and a comfortable seating area with a couch to now make it calmer and more functional.
The room’s old examination bed, which caused problems for patients with mobility issues, has been replaced with a new adjustable electric version and a phone line and computer point has been added so that patient information can be easily accessed and shared. The room has also been re-decorated to help patients and their accompanying loved ones feel calmer.
Colorectal and stoma care nurse specialist Helen Brookes, who applied to us for the refurbishment funds, said: “The room is used to see about 10 to 15 patients and their relatives a day. Of these, approximately 80% will have cancer so we wanted a room that was practical but also, calmingly therapeutic to enable patients to better receive diagnostic and treatment information, as well as counselling and support.
“As the room in its old state was functional if not ideal, there was no budget from the Trust to make our improvements but thanks to Rosemere Cancer Foundation, we have now been able to create the comfortable environment we wanted for our patients to improve their overall experience of coming to us.”
